Amongst the many hundreds of Theatre Programmes in the Arthur Lloyd Archive are thousands of contemporary advertisements for everything from Bicycles, Cars, and Vacuum Cleaners, to Clothes, Cigarettes, Insurance and Jewelry, dating from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s.

Some of the claims on these advertisements are truly bizarre, whilst others are refreshingly polite compared to the 'in your face' style and hard sell that many of today's advertisers use.

Right - This Advertisement for Elliman's Embrocation is from a Programme for the The London Pavilion in 1898.

On this site I will be adding the most interesting examples of these advertisements, and indexing them by Year, Product, and Company to form a comprehensive, and hopefully fascinating, record of contemporary styles, fashions, and products from over a hundred years of advertising in theatre programmes.
